The other day Thomas and I were talking through a coaching situation he had just experienced. I looked over and Jessie was just smiling.
We stopped, “what are you smiling at?”
Her response was gold, “it’s just fun to watch two guys living out their giftedness while we all move towards our mission.”
YES, IT IS!
That moment offered us a glimpse into the joy that is found when the right people are in the right seats.
In many cases, just because someone is in the right seat today, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is the right seat long term. It is a continual review.
This past year I went and updated my Delegation Roadmap (you can complete yours too here for free for 28 days if you would like).
Lead Well.
If you’re looking for more resources to work ON your business, we have them.
Our roles are like shrubs, they grow and need to be trimmed from time to time.
As I laid out all of the tasks that I do from week to week it was sobering to see all of the new tasks that have crept into my day. Jessie took my Delegation Roadmap and combed through it marking her name by every task that she would like to take off of my plate, and that she would enjoy the challenge of doing.
It was another moment of joy because we were able to watch Jessie grow in her role, as I trimmed mine and made space for new areas I could grow into. We were both growing even as we were trimming.
Hiring and team member placement is hard. It took us months to hire Thomas. It has taken us five years to get Jessie into this role that seems to be tailor-made to her skillset, personality, and life situation.
We’ll enjoy it for now in the same way that we enjoy the look of a freshly trimmed landscape. We are also very aware that the shrubs and grass will grow and will look uncut. We’ll need another trimming down in a few months or years.
Hiring and onboarding are never really over. I meet with Thomas and Jessie most weeks on Tuesday afternoons for about 20 minutes each and I ask them a set of questions. Here they are…
- Story of how you saw our Mission/Values hit or missed?
- What are you seeing/thinking?
- What Blind Spots are we missing?
- Role questions?
- New Ideas?
- What do you need from me?
- Here is what I see (supervisor)…
Most weeks our conversation is pretty normal. But then there is a week a real pearl of insight surfaces.
Those are the weeks we start to see the healthy growth of life while also becoming aware that we are getting closer to a trimming of tasks which ironically leads to an increase in responsibility and leadership.
When we don’t take the time for these conversations hiring can cost us thousands in lost productivity, engagement, and awareness.
Delegation is not just a cool idea. Delegation is the necessary step of personal and professional growth for both the delegator and the delegatee.
Make time for these important conversations and to trim the shrubs.
